Thirty-five vulnerable children and their caregivers in Loeriesfontein recently received a package of essential support to help ease the pressures of the new school term.
Aimed at helping children feel confident, prepared, and supported in their education, each child and their caregivers received school clothing, food hampers, and essential school supplies at the recent event held at the Loeriesfontein Thusong Centre.
“I am sincerely grateful for this support. A government grant can only go so far, and this assistance allowed me to take care of the children’s other needs too. It has made a meaningful difference, not just in getting them to school, but in how they are doing once they get there,” said Sheila Steenkamp, a beneficiary caregiver.
Funded by Loeriesfontein and Khobab Wind Farms, this initiative was developed in partnership with the Department of Social Development, whose existing relationships with vulnerable families helped ensure the support reached those who needed it most. Caregivers, many of whom are unemployed or in unstable employment, were engaged as a collective, before the handover, so that what was provided reflected each family’s specific situation.
“We want these children to arrive at school feeling ready and confident. Something as simple as having the right clothes and food at home can make all the difference to whether a child keeps showing up, and we hope this support plays a small role in ensuring that they do,” said Gwynne-Lee Borcherds, Economic Development Manager for Loeriesfontein and Khobab Wind Farms.
