A newly launched Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Internship Programme is creating meaningful opportunities for youth in Vryburg. Introduced earlier this year, the 12-month programme is designed to equip young people with critical health, safety and environmental skills, improving employability and building a pipeline of talent for the renewable energy sector.
One of the youth at the centre of the community-focused programme is Mogomotsi Segokotlo, a Vryburg local and the first HSE intern appointed at the site. With previous experience as a Junior Environmental Consultant, she has a solid foundation in environmental management and a passion for the field.
“I am finding the internship really interesting as well as empowering, as it is giving me practical exposure to my field of interest. This is my first time on a PV solar plant, and it has opened my eyes to the practical side of renewable energy,” she said.
Since joining the programme, Mogomotsi has contributed to daily HSE inspections, reporting processes, audits and environmental initiatives, while supporting technical teams to maintain safe and compliant work practices.
“The training and support have strengthened my skills, and I am now closer to my dream of becoming a skilled HSE Officer in the renewable sector,” she added.
Funded by Waterloo Solar, the programme is not only empowering individuals but also reinforcing a strong culture of safety and sustainability. It supports local participation in renewable energy while ensuring that operations are conducted responsibly, with long-term benefits for both the community and the industry.
“Investing in young people from our host communities is essential to building a sustainable future. Mogomotsi has shown great enthusiasm and professionalism, and we are proud to support her growth while strengthening our site’s safety culture,” said Kebapetse Dipitse, Social Performance Practitioner for Waterloo Solar.
