Local internships give young people the chance to build skills and gain real work experience close to home. For Kern Papier from Hopefield, an 18‑month Technical Services Internship at Umoya Energy Wind Farm is doing just that. Through the programme, he is learning from an experienced team and gaining exposure to the wide range of technical skills needed to operate a wind farm.
Having previously worked on-site as part of the Umoya Energy’s maintenance team and obtaining an IT learnership, Kern has already gained some practical skills in technical services, making him the perfect candidate for this new role.
“This internship aligns with my values and passions. Being part of a solution that benefits future generations and contributes to community empowerment is something I’m very proud of,” said Kern.
In this new role, Kern will gain hands-on experience in plant operations, diagnostics, maintenance, safety procedures, and electro-mechanical systems while working closely with the technical team to help ensure the plant runs safely and efficiently.
Also joining the internship programme is Willbur Cleophas, who has stepped into the Social Performance Internship role. With a background in Public Relations and Communication, as well as experience in content creation and digital marketing, Willbur brings a passion for people and social change.
“What excites me about this role is the human connection behind the work. It’s not just meetings and reports, but actively listening to people and being part of solutions that improve their lives,” he said.
In his role, Willbur will engage with local stakeholders, assist in implementing development initiatives, and help ensure that the wind farm’s work remains rooted in the real needs of the surrounding communities.
“My goal is to be useful, so that when I leave, I leave knowing I contributed to something meaningful,” added Willbur.
Now in its third year, this internship programme not only offers local youth job training; it gives them access to industries that were once out of reach. Additionally, it highlights the critical role that renewable energy companies can play in nurturing local talent and supporting long-term socio-economic development.
