With unemployment rates among youth and women remaining high in Noupoort, investing in skills development is crucial for economic empowerment. Recognising this need, a three-day training programme tailored for women and youth in the construction industry was hosted recently. This initiative marks the first of many scheduled for this year, aimed at uplifting and equipping aspiring entrepreneurs and professionals in Noupoort.
Thuliswa Madikane, one of the trainees, expressed her gratitude, saying, “Breaking into the construction industry as a woman is not easy, but this programme provided the mentorship and support I needed. I’ve gained confidence, skills, and a strong network of women in construction. I’m proud to be a business owner and employer, creating opportunities for others.”
Coordinated by a black woman-owned local company, Business Ezone Ventures, the training was funded by Noupoort Wind Farm, in partnership with the Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency (SEDFA). It provided participants with in-depth knowledge of both technical construction skills and essential business and entrepreneurial strategies.
‘This initiative equips women and youth with industry-specific skills, enhancing their employability and self-employment opportunities in Noupoort. By fostering local expertise, it aims to reduce reliance on external skilled labour while encouraging more women to enter and succeed in the male-dominated construction sector. Ultimately, it promotes gender equality and challenges industry stereotypes, paving the way for a more inclusive workforce,” explained Vanessa Fredericks, Economic Development Manager for Noupoort Wind Farm.
Participants received training in various critical areas, including exposure to national building regulations, construction methods and materials, and health and safety regulations for construction sites. In addition to technical skills, they also gained expertise in business planning, financial management, marketing and sales strategies, as well as exposure to contract management and dispute resolution.
Furthermore, participants received guidance in on the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) accreditation and Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) registration. . The participants obtained certification in construction management, boosting their career prospects.
