For 26-year-old Lebogang Dikane from Hertzogville, stepping into the renewable energy sector marks an exciting new chapter and a chance to build a future close to home. Earlier this year, he joined Boshof Solar Power as a Technical Intern — becoming the first intern from the immediate community to take up the opportunity at the plant.
Since beginning his internship in January, Lebogang has been gaining hands-on experience in solar plant operations and maintenance, supporting the team with inspections, performance monitoring, and preventative maintenance. He holds a Diploma and a Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Electrical Engineering from the Central University of Technology and will complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management this month.
“Being able to kick start my career in my hometown is incredibly valuable. It’s rewarding to contribute to a project that brings clean energy, skills development, and employment opportunities to my fellow community members,” shared Lebogang.
Lebogang’s interest in renewable energy developed during his electrical engineering studies, particularly in energy management and power systems. He was inspired by the global transition towards sustainable energy and the opportunity to contribute to solutions that address climate change while improving energy access.
“Lebo is a smart, sharp, and vibrant young man. I look forward to supporting his growth and development over the next 12 months and seeing the positive impact of this internship right here in our community,” said Noluthando Mazibuko, Economic Development Specialist at Boshof Solar Power.
Internships for young engineers not only provide practical experience but also enhance problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, allowing emerging professionals to showcase their potential, proficiency, and talents.
“I am most excited about developing my technical skills in solar plant operations, maintenance, fault finding, and performance monitoring,” adds Lebogang. “I would encourage young people to consider studying engineering or technical fields related to energy. Renewable energy is a growing industry with many opportunities.”
