Learners from schools in the Springbok and surrounding communities of the Northern Cape took part in the Global Wind Day Schools Competition, which used a hands-on approach to turn abstract science and environmental concepts into practical real-world skills.
Hosted by Kangnas Wind Farm, this year’s challenge brought together five local high schools in a creative and educational experience aimed at promoting STEM careers, sustainability, and the future of renewable energy in this part of the country.
Targeted at Grade 9 learners, the competition combined hands-on learning with research, design, and teamwork. Each school team was tasked with designing and building a working model wind turbine capable of generating enough energy to light an LED. In addition, learners submitted an A3 canvas painting or photograph based on one of three environmental themes: Wind and Nature, Wind Works, or Wind at Sea.
“This initiative is about more than just competition; it’s about building a pipeline of future problem-solvers and innovators. Global Wind Day offers a powerful platform to raise awareness, ignite curiosity, and inspire young people to consider careers in science, engineering, and renewable energy,” stated Rouchet Daniels, Economic Development Manager for Kangnas Wind Farm.
The five-member teams also had to deliver short presentations explaining their projects, with judging based on functionality, design, creativity, sustainability, and storytelling. Amongst the top-performing schools in this year’s initiative was Concordia Hoërskool, which took first place, followed by Hoërskool Namakwaland and Okiep Hoërskool, taking third place.
“Our learners embraced the project with creativity and determination, exploring how art can connect with wind energy. Not only did they develop new skills, but they also gained confidence by overcoming challenges. Being announced as the winners was a proud moment that recognised the hard work they put in and the potential these kinds of opportunities unlock for their future,” said Ms. Marsha Jones, from Hoërskool Concordia.
Prizes included R10,000 and the Turbine Triumph Trophy for the winning school, R5,000 for the runner-up, and R2,500 for third place. All top teams also received branded merchandise, scientific calculators, online retail vouchers, and certificates.
As part of the grand prize, the winning team from Concordia Hoërskool will be enjoying an educational tour to Kangnas Wind Farm later this year, getting an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at how large-scale wind turbines generate clean energy for communities.
